About US Sales Tax Calculator
FAQ
Q Which US states have no sales tax?
Five states (NOMAD): New Hampshire, Oregon, Montana, Alaska, Delaware. NH and OR are truly zero. Montana allows 3% resort taxes. Alaska has no state tax but localities (Juneau, Wasilla) charge their own. Delaware has zero sales tax but a gross receipts tax on businesses.
Q How do I calculate sales tax from a total price?
Use the Extract mode: divide the gross (tax-inclusive) total by 1 + the combined tax rate. Example: $107 ÷ 1.07 = $100 net at 7% combined rate. The calculator does this automatically when you switch the mode toggle.
Q What is the highest sales tax in the US?
Louisiana has the highest combined state + local rate at 10.11% (Tax Foundation 2026). Tennessee follows at 9.55%, Washington at 9.51%, Arkansas and Alabama tied at 9.46%. The single highest local rate touches 12-13% in some Alabama and Louisiana cities.
Q Do I have to charge sales tax for online sales?
Yes, in any state where you have economic nexus. Per the 2018 Supreme Court Wayfair decision, every state can require collection once you exceed roughly $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions per year into that state. Marketplaces like Amazon collect on your behalf in most states.
Q Are groceries taxed everywhere in the US?
No. 32 states exempt or reduce sales tax on grocery food. Mississippi taxes groceries at the full 7%; Alabama is reducing in stages. Restaurant prepared food is generally taxed at the full rate even in states that exempt grocery food.
Q What is the difference between state and local sales tax?
State sales tax is set by the state legislature and applies statewide. Local sales tax (city, county, transit district, special taxing district) is layered on top and varies by ZIP code. The combined rate is what consumers actually pay at checkout.
Q Is there sales tax on services in the US?
Most states tax tangible goods only and exempt services. But many states tax specific services: lodging (most states), telecom (most), prepared food (most), professional services like haircuts and lawn care (about 20 states). Hawaii and South Dakota tax services broadly.
Q How does NYC sales tax work?
New York City charges 8.875% total: 4% NY state + 4.5% city + 0.375% Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD). Clothing and footwear under $110 per item are exempt from the state portion (4%) — you pay only the city + MCTD = 4.875%.
