FAQ
Q How much is the bank overdraft fee in 2026?
Big banks: Chase $34, Wells Fargo $35, BofA $10 (reduced 2022). CFPB's proposed $5 cap was REPEALED by Congress in early 2025 (S.J.Res. 18). Online banks like Ally, Chime, SoFi, Capital One 360, Discover, Charles Schwab Bank: $0 overdraft fees.
Q Why was the CFPB overdraft cap repealed?
Congress used the Congressional Review Act fast-track procedure to overturn the rule before it took effect Oct 1, 2025. Senate voted 52-48; signed by President as P.L. 119-10. Banks lobbied that the $5 cap would have cost them $5 billion in annual fee revenue.
Q How is the overdraft implied APR so high?
Math: $35 fee on a $5 overdraft repaid same day = 700% APR. $35 fee on $200 overdraft for 10 days = 64% APR. Even worst credit cards charge 36% APR — overdraft fees are far worse on small short-duration overdrafts.
Q What banks have $0 overdraft fees?
Capital One 360, Citi, Ally Bank, Chime (SpotMe up to $200), SoFi, Charles Schwab Bank, Discover Bank, Varo. Many traditional banks have reduced fees: BofA $10, Wells $35, Chase $34. Many also added grace periods (24 hours to deposit).
Q Can I opt out of overdraft protection?
YES — under Federal Reg E, banks must let you OPT IN to overdraft for ATM/debit transactions. If you don't opt in, the bank declines insufficient transactions instead of charging fee. ALWAYS opt out unless you have specific need for the protection.
Q What is sustained overdraft fee?
Some banks charge an additional $25-$35 if account stays negative for 5+ days. Stacks on top of per-item fees. Helps banks recoup admin costs but compounds the customer pain. Pay back overdraft within 4 days to avoid this.
Q Should I link savings for overdraft protection?
YES — most banks offer free or low-fee ($10) transfers from savings to cover overdraft. Far cheaper than $35 fee. Best with high-yield savings: HYSA earns 4-5% interest while serving as buffer. Just maintain $200-$500 in savings.
Q Can overdraft fees affect my credit score?
NOT directly — overdraft fees aren't reported to credit bureaus by default. BUT: if you don't pay back the overdraft within 30-60 days, banks may close the account and send to collections, which DOES hit credit. Persistent overdrafters may also be reported to ChexSystems (banking history bureau).
