FAQ

Q How do I calculate my real hourly wage?

Three formulas: (1) Standard hourly = annual salary ÷ 2,080. (2) Real hourly = salary ÷ actual paid hours (deduct unpaid lunch). (3) Total comp hourly = (salary + benefits) ÷ 2,080. Most US salaries hide 5-15 unpaid hours/week.

Q Why is my real hourly different from my expected hourly?

Unpaid lunch breaks (typical 1 hr/day = 5/week unpaid), unpaid overtime expectations for exempt employees, and commute time. A "$100K / 40 hr" job often pays only $90/hr real when these are factored in.

Q How much are my benefits worth per hour?

BLS Q3 2025 ECEC: average $14.38/hr in benefits (30% of total comp). Health insurance is largest ($5-$10/hr value), followed by retirement match ($2-$4), paid leave ($3-$6), and other ($1-$2). Government workers benefit-rich at ~$22/hr.

Q What is the BLS average wage in 2026?

$32.66/hr (mean for all civilian workers, BLS ECEC Q3 2025) for cash wages. Total compensation including benefits averages $47.04/hr. Government workers slightly higher mean total comp at $60.91/hr; private industry $43.42/hr.

Q How does unpaid lunch affect my hourly?

1 hour/day × 5 days = 5 unpaid hours/week. On a 40-hr/week job, you're actually working 35 paid hours. Real hourly = annual ÷ (35 × 52) = annual ÷ 1,820. For $75K salary: standard $36.06 → real $41.21.

Q Should I quote my hourly to total comp or just salary?

For freelance: TOTAL comp hourly. For W-2 jobs: depend on context — base salary for offer comparison, total comp for value perception. When quoting to clients, use 2-3× your standard hourly to cover taxes, benefits, and overhead.

Q How do I value my equity/RSUs in hourly terms?

Annualize: total RSU grant ÷ vesting years × current stock price. Add to salary for total comp hourly. Example: 4-year RSU grant of 1,000 shares at $100 = $25K/yr × $100 = $25,000 added to comp. At 2,080 hrs = $12/hr boost in total comp hourly.

Q Is $50/hr a good wage in 2026?

$50/hr × 2,080 = $104,000/yr — well above the BLS mean ($32.66/hr × 2,080 = $67,933). It's in the top 30% of US wages and exceeds the median household income. Solid white-collar / skilled trade pay; below FAANG senior tech compensation; competitive in most metro areas.
