How to use

  1. 1 Enter qualified education expenses for the year. AOTC includes tuition + required fees + course materials (books, computers if required). LLC includes tuition + required fees only.
  2. 2 Choose AOTC or LLC. AOTC requires ≤4 prior claims and ≤4 years of post-secondary, degree-seeking, ≥half-time. LLC has no such limits.
  3. 3 Enter MAGI from Form 1040 — calculator applies the $80K/$160K phase-in and $90K/$180K cap. MFS filers cannot claim either credit.
  4. 4 For AOTC: enter year of study (1-4 only) and prior AOTC years claimed (max 4 lifetime per student). Toggle felony drug conviction (disqualifies).
  5. 5 Click Calculate to see total credit, refundable portion (AOTC only — 40%), nonrefundable portion, and whether the phaseout reduced your eligible amount.

FAQ

Q What is the difference between AOTC and LLC?

AOTC is up to $2,500 PER STUDENT, 40% refundable, but limited to first 4 years of college, ≥half-time, degree-seeking. LLC is up to $2,000 PER RETURN, nonrefundable, but covers any post-secondary education unlimited years (grad school, job skills classes).

Q How much is the American Opportunity Tax Credit in 2026?

Up to $2,500 per qualifying student per year: 100% of first $2,000 in qualified expenses + 25% of next $2,000. 40% of the credit ($1,000 max) is refundable — you get cash even if you owe no tax. Phases out between $80K-$90K MAGI single, $160K-$180K MFJ.

Q How much is the Lifetime Learning Credit in 2026?

Up to $2,000 per tax return (NOT per student) — 20% of the first $10,000 in qualified tuition and fees. Same phaseout as AOTC: $80K-$90K MAGI single, $160K-$180K MFJ. Made permanent at these income limits by SECURE Act 2019.

Q Can I claim AOTC and LLC in the same year?

Yes — but NOT for the same student or same expenses. Example: child A is freshman ($4K tuition) → claim AOTC for child A. Child B is grad student → claim LLC for child B. Same return, both credits, no overlap.

Q What expenses qualify for AOTC?

Tuition + required fees + course materials (books, supplies, computer if required by course). Room and board, transportation, insurance, medical care DO NOT qualify. Must be paid to an eligible institution (almost all accredited US colleges).

Q Is AOTC refundable?

Partially — 40% of the credit ($1,000 max) is refundable. The remaining 60% reduces tax to $0 maximum. Many low-income parents and independent students get refunded $1,000 cash for each qualifying student even if they owe no federal tax.

Q Who claims the education credit — parent or student?

If the student is a dependent on parent's return, parent claims it. If the parent's MAGI exceeds the phaseout cap ($180K MFJ), the student can't double-claim while remaining dependent. Strategy: parent forgoes claiming as dependent so student can claim AOTC on own return.

Q Can I claim AOTC if I have student loan interest?

Yes — they're separate. AOTC is for tuition paid; student loan interest deduction (up to $2,500 above-line) is for interest paid. You can claim both in the same year. Combined potential tax break: $2,500 AOTC + $2,500 deduction × 22% bracket = $3,050 cash.
